Freebie Feelers: Tumblestone

Freebie Feelers is a series where we download the free monthly console-specific or newly released free-to-play games to test their worth. This series will contain some useful information as well as plenty of personal opinion. While these articles may not be reviews, we hope that you will be able to use them to help decide whether that free download is worth it.

What is it?

Tumblestone is a match-3 game with a difference. Instead of having to move blocks or gems, you have to shoot three of the same coloured block in a row. It’s kinda like reverse Tetris, where you’re trying to get rid of all of the blocks above you. The thing is, once you shoot one colour, you have to shoot two more of it otherwise it will reset the board and you’ll have to start again. It boasts a 40 hour campaign, and that’s not even counting the multiplayer levels.

What did you think?

Tumblestone was easy at first, but even before the first “boss” it was showing promise of getting much more challenging. The “boss” level has you solving it as quickly as possible while the blocks travel down the screen towards you, to add extra pressure. It’s a really fun game, and is a welcome change to the usual match-3 varieties. I didn’t get chance to check it out in either local or online multiplayer, but I can see people coming to blows over it. Too much multiplayer Dr Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine in my youth.

Is it worth downloading?

As one of the Twitch Prime games for June, Tumblestone usually sets you back £18.99. If you’re a fan of match-3 games then yes, you will definitely get a kick out of this. If you hate puzzle games, this won’t change your mind, but if you’re just not keen on match-3s then you should still give it a try.
